He gained prominence in the early 1960s as a second-generation member of the Gutai Art Association, creating relief-like paintings with vinyl adhesive. He moved to Paris in 1966 and has maintained a prolific practice there ever since. After achieving international acclaim for his printmaking in the 1970s, he broke new ground in the late 1970s by combining vinyl adhesive and graphite black in his works. In recent years, he has garnered renewed global recognition. - Based on research conducted at the Takesada Matsutani Archives of the Shōen Endowment Fund in Paris, this richly documented volume provides a comprehensive examination of Matsutani's career spanning over 60 years through section introductions, commentary on works, critical essays, a detailed chronology, and a bibliography. - Features a plethora of illustrations, including unpublished drawings, sketchbook excerpts, new photography of details, and archival photos, comprising 300 color and 93 monochrome illustrations.
